Coming Attractions

I have decided to dedicate time into getting the site redesign finished. I'm not sure if it will be a complete overhaul or more of a subtle improvement yet, so I can't say how long it will take. Don't expect many updates in the meantime- although I'll try and do some if it takes a while. At the time of writing, with no series ongoing and having just had to scrap my current project I am not sure what my next animation will be. The world , as they say, is my lobster. See you on the other side.

Looking to the future...

There's something I've been planning on doing for some time, but I've been waiting for the right time to put into action. With MPZ heading towards the end of it's fifth year online I'm going to shake things up a little bit and start putting more focus on comics. Not only the single-panel stuff I've been posting for years but also comic strips and full length stories. Some characters from my animations may appear in them, and some comics may end up later as animations. I'm planning big things. Before anyone worries though I am not going to be stopping doing animations- I'm not even planning on animating less often. It's just that the gaps inbetween will animations will be filled with comicky goodness and other stuff. It may take some time to get into the swing of things but hopefully you'll stick with me- and I hope you'll enjoy the ride!

You may have heard of the site DeviantArt that allows users to share their artwork galleries online.  I'm here today to let you know that my good friend Siobhan (who's work has once appeared on this very site) has a gallery there and thoroughly marvelous it is too. 2010 has started well so far, but I've got big plans for mpz in the coming months! I'm planning on beefing up my comics output and with that in mind MPZ now has a space on Drunkduck, one of the web's top webcomics communities. More info on that is coming soon. A site redesign should also be happening in the near future. A new collaboration with proving ground is in the pipeline too, so watch this space...

Lovebytes: the complete saga (sort of)

Lovebytes is now available on Youtube in HD. When I came up with the idea originally it was called UD8.tv- (pronounced you-date in case you were wondering). The plan was always to release the episodes separately and then combine them into a longer animation. Now six episodes and a name change later it's done. It was made complicated by the fact that I switched to doing animations in HD part way through, so the earlier episodes had to be tinkered with. The finished project only contains four of the episodes- I decided that the episodes featuring Lord Squiffington and Dotty were the weaker two so I thought it worked better without them. They can still be viewed here on the site.

So, that's it for Lovebytes. There may always be a second 'series' if this one proves popular (and I come up with enough ideas) and the characters may be back in other forms. But for now at least it's finished. You can check it out

Lovebytes episode 6!

Here it is the first new animation of the year, of the decade even! It was meant to be done before Christmas but stuff got in the way. This follows directly on from the last episode in that it reuses a character from the Big brother animation but with a new take on the character. The character was initially played by my lovely friend but long story short I had to recast- and was able to take the character in a new direction. It now features a fantastic performance by a brilliant actress named Annabelle Bay.

Warning: Contains adult humour

You can watch it here. (Flash version) OR watch it/download it here as the podcast.

Operation Christmas Phase 3

It's still Christmas- the big day itself may have gone but it still Tis the season until after New Year's Day...Basically this is me apologising for not bringing to you earlier. I've been busy, what with yuletide and everything. But I got some time to spare so I've made a quickie animation that sees the return of a friend of the site, the fabulous Mr BD Bear. It's more an animated Christmas/ New Years Card than anything, (if you've seen BD's first appearance you'll know what to expect)

New video

I've made a short promo for The Ontario Music Awards, which is open to Canadian music types (plus international submissions for an international category) from now til next July. I made it as a favour as the event's organizer is a friend of my Canadian buddy who you may know as the talent behind Proving Ground. Obviously it's not like my usual stuff (as it's just an info based promo) but I had fun messing around with the effects and you can see it over on youtube. I can always be hired to make promos for events or websites etc. so feel free to drop me a line. Proper MPZ type shizzle will be along this side of christmas.

It's been an ambition of mine to be able to bring other artists to your attention- be they cartoonists, animators, writers or whatever. Following on from the remake of Leprocop, the next trailer in the series Pacman Begins was the next one to get the treatment.

I AM alive!

Yeah, um so it's been far too long since my last post and even longer since I've posted anything substantial but events have conspired. I have been working more at the job that actually pays me money (good for money, less good for time), which is only the beginning of my excuses. Also I have had yet another bloody cold that meant I didn't feel like doing much of anything, which was swiftly followed by the arrival of The Great British Summer which meant sweltering heat (for about a week), which again prevents me from spending all day staring at a screen making silly cartoons. Finally I now have KITTENS. They are very distracting. And awesomely cute.

So yeah, sorry about that. But I will make up for it. You will see a couple of new photoshops attached to this post that you can see in the newly updated photoshop gallery

Five Frickin' Years: MPZ goes HD

Monkey Pirate Zombie is officially Five Frickin' years old as of tomorrow (28th of April), which means expect all sorts of celebratory shenanigans over the coming days, weeks of months (we're five for a whole year after all). To kick off I have an announcement : that I will now be producing animations in HD. So I hatched a plan to transfer lots of my old toons into the new spanky format. Until I discovered that the HD-ness shows up the creakyness of some of the old material. So i decided I had to basically do it all again.

Which brings us to the shiny new version of my personal favourite animation from the site's history: Leprocop. It has been pretty much remade from the ground up (although the awesome voice acting remains) and is about 90% new, and very shiny looking. It's also a sneaky peak at where I'm looking at going with my trailer spoofs in future. You can check it out in HD on YouTube. (Make sure you click the HD tab to watch it in best quality)
RIGHT HERE
This may be just the first of my old toons to get shinied up so watch this space.

Boring techie update (updated)

If you swung by here in the last 24 hours in this space you may have seen a very happy post in this space about how I had overcome the problem with the coding on this page that made it look screwy on MS Internet Explorer. Very pleased with myself I was too. However checking back this morning I have no idea how but it's screwed up again. As a last ditch attempt I'm going to scrap the template and start again. So in the meantime there may be some disruption and the look of the site may change back and forth. Sorry for the disruption but hopefully It'll be worth it in the end.

update 14.55 BST: Site maintainence has begun. Site will look different for a little while, please bear with us.

update 16.30: Now looking pretty much as it should. A few bits of cosmetic changes still to go but so far so good! knowing my luck the small changes will cause the whole thing to go screwy again!

Wednesday, 1 April 2009

I'm very excited today to bring you the most exciting news in the history of the site. Just hours ago we've signed a contract with a major Hollywood studio! In Summer 2011 Leprocop will be coming to a cinema near you! Based on our popular animation, it will be adapted into a full length feature. The director is already attached- and this is the best news of all.-the visionary genius behind such modern classics as House of the Dead and Bloodrayne 3. Yes folks, none other than Uwe Boll. It's too early to confirm casting but Bruce Willis has shown interest in the role of Jack Kannon, and Jeremy Irons is in negotiations to play the villain- a real coup after his tour-de-force performance in Dungeons and Dragons. More news as we get it.

UPDATE//...... Well obviously this was our little April Fools gag. Ahhahahahahah! Sure nobody fell for it, (Uwe Boll? Visionary?) but hey it was fun.

March Round-up

I'm going to try and start doing these again, so you can find easier to keep up if you're a not-so-regular visitor to the site. This will be the highlights of the last month but to see it in every single post of the month - you can click here.
  • We launched the 5th anniversary celebration of MPZ, by giving the site a makeover. It looks best in Firefox or Google Chrome.
  • The Flash Gallery became 'Movies' but it's still the same old nonsense. You can download most animations in mp4 format now too!
  • The series previously referred to as ud8.tv is now called 'Lovebytes' and has a snazzy new minisite
  • I made a promo video for Proving Ground's new album Through The Red Door. It's got zombies in it.
  • The booty section was updated.

Ch-ch-changes again

Believe it or not, Monkey Pirate Zombie will be 5 years old on 28th of April 2009! Woo! Go us! Who wants to make us a cake? Anyhoos as part of an early Birthday present I've given the site a bit of a makeover, sort of a version 2.0 of the new look that was launched last summer, as you should be able to see. What else is new? The 'Flash' section is now called 'movies'- I felt that as flash can mean movies or interactive games (and most videos can be downloaded too now) I needed to distinguish the animations. So The page has been redesigned- it's less flashy but much easier to maintain and keep up to date. Ud8tv finally has a proper mini-site and a new name to go with it- Lovebytes. The site map has been redone, and from now on if you'll find yourself there if you stumble on a broken link as well.

Through The Red Door

I can finally reveal what I've been working on now. A little while ago, Paulo (you may know him as The Protector, the very talented composer of the MPZ theme among others) asked me to make a video to promote the release of his upcoming third album with his band Proving Ground. In typically overambitious fashion I set to work on a zombie epic. Eventually I had to scale back my ambitions slightly but I'm pleased with the result. It's my first action animation, and is quite different in style to anything else I've done to date, so I'd be interested to hear if you'd like to see more in the same vein. A word of warning- it contains violence against zombies.

Click here to watch the high quality Flash version (recommended) or you can see it on Youtube here (less high quality). Proving Ground's new album is due this spring, and the first single is being released on 13th of March, so if you like the music you can buy it soon! Visit their site here

This is also available as the latest podcast.

Strangely familiar?

Waaaay back in 2005, I produced Trailer Trash IV, a little piece called Sense and Sensibility and Zombies- combining period drama with zombie movie at last. Fast forward to today when I learn (via Slashfilm) that a book called Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is to be released in April and that Hollywood producers are allegedly fighting for the rights. It's probably unlikely that the author of the mash up book has ever seen my animation or ever heard of monkey pirate zombie (the Internet is an awful big place) but it does seem like a pretty big coincidence. Even if I did think it was a rip-off there wouldn't really be anything much I could do about it, so I'm just going to have to assume it's a big ol' coincidence. And it would make an awesome movie. However I'll be watching out. If this guy's next project is Leprocop, there will be trouble!

New gear, Monkeys next top model?

Several new movie monkey t-shirts have been added to the store. Which coincidentally would make fantastic valentine presents for the monkey-loving loved one in your life don't you think?

Incidentally anybody out there who would like to get their hands on some MPZ merchandise for free in exchange for modeling them here on the interwebs should e-mail me. To keep costs down I'd be looking for just one lady-model (0f fairly average size and build) based in the US.

Sorry to any would-be male models but you'd probably look silly in a girls' t-shirt! Also, although I'm based in the UK, the stuff would be shipped from Stateside, so shipping internationally would add to the cost. If you are interested and in that category then get mailing! Don't forget to include a pic.

Chin Up Chucks

The Last Monday in January (which would be today) is statistically know as The Most Depressing Day Of the Year (don't ask me how- ask SCIENCE) which is why it's known as Blue Monday. So I made a very quick rough and ready animation featuring someone who wants to cheer you up.

By the way, this isn't the animation I began last week, but a wee bonus- so there's still more animated goodness in the works already. Hurrah for me! I rock!

it's coming....

Yes indeed sirs and madams and any sir/madam hybrids that might be reading this, the first animation of '09 has been begun and will hopefully be ready before the end of the year. Or possibly even the end of the month. But let's not be too ambitious eh?

Anyway seriously it will be ready pretty soon all being well. Hope you're all enjoying the new year so far!

back to the ol' drawing board

I have been working behind the scenes on redesigning bits of the site that were left out when I did the redesign in the summer. While I gave the home page and blog snazzy makeovers I intended to do the same to the rest of the site but frankly it hadn't happened as quickly as I intended. So I'm currently making up for lost time and doing it now. Once it's done I can concentrate on making new stuff. Just as a wee taster of what I've been up to take a look at the new front page of Back to the Drawing Board

a little somethin'

The Photoshop gallery has been updated to add the festive shops I did for New Years. I've also fixed a couple of issues the page developed* last time I updated it (the links work again now for example!) Click to check it out.

* OK maybe I actually caused it myself. Even if I don't know how I managed it.

Normality resumed.....

....or as close to normality as it ever gets round here. I'm back from the festive break and have all sorts of plan for this year. To start off some left over business from last year... Movie monkeys finally have their own page. Also you'll now see that the photoshop gallery, illustration gallery and stuff and nonsense gallery can all be found from the main menu bar by clicking the 'stuff' button.

Christmas Present 2!

The second part of the Christmas animation double bill is here, following on from yesterday. Without further ado....... Happy Bunny returns for a (probably) one-off for his very own Christmas special. Click here to check it out. It is also available as a Podcast.

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and New year, and thanks for all your support throughout 2008. This might well be the final post of the year as I enjoy the season, but I'll see you in 2009, if not before!

Christmas Present 1!

I wasn't expecting to be able to get you Christmas stuff in time, but I'm pleased to tell you that I will, so ignore what I said before. Not only is a brand new animation is on it's way but I've also stuck out a bonus episode of the podcast: featuring the Christmas animation I made in 2005. It's new to the podcast, even if some of you may have seen it before. Either way you can check it out here.

Watch this space, something totally new is coming too.....

MPZTV 20: best of monkey pirate zombie 2008

I've put together a little special episode of the podcast that brings together the best of the episodes from the last year or so ( Trailer Trash episode 7 is actually from last year, but lets not get too picky). Seemed like about the right time for it. Check it out here or subscribe or check out past episodes from here.

Podcast update

A bonus episode has been released of the podcast. Click to check it out, or here to subscribe. The episode is the only episode of Happy Bunny that never appeared in the podcast. Originally it was interactive- you could choose an alternate ending. Now the interactivity has gone, but you can still enjoy all 3 endings. This animation is a couple of years old, so the animation isn't my best but it's here for completions sake.

Time for Change......

I've thoroughly revamped the booty section (where wallpapers and downloads can be found) and had a good sort out. A lot of the old wallpapers are gone but there are new ones in the place. Some older ones will be returning once I've fiddled with them to get them up to the same standard as the new ones (older 'papers were saved as jpegs, whereas I now save them as the better quality png format, if you want to get technical). The selection will certainly improve soon. As well as backgrounds, you will also find a large number of new avatars for you to use in instant messenger programs or in forums. Take a look around! More content will be added later

NEW: pickles the clown

A First here at Monkey Pirate Zombie Towers today- as we present the first MPZ musical toon. It's short and there's not much to it, but hopefully you'll enjoy it!

It's online here and available to download as the latest Podcast episode. You can also see the Flash original here, but I recommend the podcast version as for reasons I can't even begin to understand the sound goes out of sync when I upload it- although it may just be my machine. Anyway- off you go to meet Pickles!
