Life On Mars is about to get another airing on UK TV Bravo, Monday10pm) giving me an excuse to sing it's praises. For those who don't know, it tells of a modern cop who finds himself transported back to the 1970's- the mystery is he back in time, or is it all in his head? This is the set up for the clash between the main character- Sam Tyler- and everybody around him, and he tries to bring his modern police values to the very different world of 70's police. It's basically an excuse to remake the Sweeney with a slight quantum Leap-stylee sci-fi twist. And the soundtrack is fantastic, is all the 70's period setting. It's the best homegrown adult fantasy/sci-fi show on British TV in years, and it's probably thanks to the success of new Doctor Who series that such things are being made. Thankfully a new series is planned for next year, but there is one little thing that is bugging me. A US remake is planned and I just have to ask why? This process of remaking really irks me. The US Office may be pretty well received but for me, without David Brent it can never match the original. The original works so well, I don't know why they can't just leave it alone. I suppose if they make it different enough and evoke US 70's shows such as Starsky and Hutch it could be ok, but really, is the US audience so closed minded they can't take a UK property into their hearts?Of course not- the success of a little franchise called Harry Potter would certainly suggest otherwise. It might only be a cult thing on some cable channel, but why not let out American friends enjoy the undiluted original? It'd certainly be cheaper than remaking it! That said, I've just read the very talented David E Kelly is involved, so it could yet make me eat my words...
