Hooray! The weather today is rubbish. This is the way it should be. Hopefully this is the last we shall see of the heatwave, which was frankly getting most un-English. Anyway....

It was a happy day indeed when I noticed that Digital Channel ITV4 was reshowing my fave cheese-fest Martial Law (Mondays 8pm, back after a break for the Tour de France). It was a not entirely successful attempt to launch Hong Kong superstar and Jackie Chan's chum Sammo Hung to the west. Sammo played a Chinese cop on transfer to LA, called in am inspired move not Sammo Hung but Sammo Law. See what they did there? If you think Rush Hour the TV show you're not far off, especially in series two when they teamed him up with a streetwise African-American. It's very silly, and Sammo's attempts as acting in English leads to some mangled delivery, but it's all part of the fun. The thing about Sammo is he is fantastic martial artist, but there's no getting around it he's fat. A bit of a porker in fact. The following sequence appears at least once in every episode:

Sammo: Drop the Gun!
Generic Thug: What you going to do about it Fatty/Piggy/tubby/Chairman Mao?

The Unarmed Sammo then kicks seven shades of shite out of Generic Thug. It's all very Jackie Chan-esque with creative Kung-Fu with household objects and outtakes at the end of each episode. And I kid you not, I've just seen an episode which ended with Sammo jamming with a band of Spinal-Tap style cockney rockers in an improptou rendition of Twist and Shout. In the middle of a Police Station. It's that kind of show. And I can't help but love it...

While I'm here, if readers in UK have access to Film4, make sure you tune into watch Castle of Cagliostro tomorrow at 4.55pm. It's the first film by Spirited Away director and greatest living animator Hayao Miyazaki, as its therefore one of the finest animated movies of all time. They're showing a season of his films, if you haven't seen them, you owe to yourself to watch them all.
